Internet Crime I

A short passage about transnational internet crime including a vocabulary list.

Foreign hackers caught in ThailandAs the internet has spread across national borders and connected the world, transnational crime has increased.

Fraud
, the crime of getting money from people by tricking them or lying to them, is perhaps the most common internet crime.

One kind of fraud is identity theft or phishing.

Computer hackers send a victim an email attachment or have them download a Trojan horse virus which enables them to gain access to a victim’s computer.

Once the virus is active on the victim’s computer, the hackers monitor the victim’s online banking transactions and use this information to withdraw money from their bank account.

Another way that the crime of fraud is perpetrated is by installing fake card slots on an ATM.

The PIN number of card holders' is then stolen by tiny skimmers inside the slots.

Taiwanese phone scam gangs have also used call centers in Thailand as a base to call Chinese people with credit cards in countries around Asia and, posing as police, deceive and threaten them and convince them to deposit money into their bank account. (Photo on right of some foreign hackers caught in Thailand).

This is not likely to be a popular way of thinking about the internet crime among local authorities, but without genuine operating systems and other software on computers, it is basically impossible to prove that person A committed action N. Even in cases when genuine products are installed, which is not the case with 80%-90%+/- computers in Thailand, especially at internet cafes, it is not truly possible to prove that again person A committed act N. We can prove within a certain tolerance that computer X transmitted O data to computer K via server R, but computers do not have the ability to think and remember for themselves. Computers do what people tell them to do. Without video and other evidence to prove that person B wrote, sent, typed, logged on, or did action V, we cannot really determine which person made the computer perform function I. With non-genuine operating systems, like what are regularly pre-installed on computers at shops nationwide in Thailand, very few experts will be able to prove beyond any doubt that hidden programs/functions are not installed with the non-genuine software which allows third party users to mimic computer IDs or run applications beneath the surface as owners use computers. At internet cafes, there is very little chance to prove that network administrators are not monitoring other users and potentially faking IDs to commit X actions. Like with most other legal cases which rely on indirect, testimony-based (and faith-based), qualitative data to try and convict, these cyber crimes are policed and prosecuted outside of the scope of real science, which is what brought us the computers...any computer scientist with a PhD and most with a BS can tell you that much. Good defense attorneys should be able to invalidate the methods of the police and prosecution in a genuine software environment with a non-biased, impartial, good judge, and certainly this should be the case in the non-genuine software environment. Employing reliable methods might make it easier for some criminals to get away with crimes, but it will ensure that innocent people are not imprisoned and it will get law enforcement, focused on larger issues more clearly...away from the tough guy unethical persona.
