AIR POLLUTION

Protest has reduced Bangkok air pollution

One beneficial side-effect of the Bangkok shutdown campaign has been a reduction in air pollution because there are fewer cars on usually congested roads.

There already has been a decrease in hazardous fine dust particles in the air with levels of PM 10, particulate matter with a diameter of 10 microns or less, having fallen by about half in the Lat Phrao, Chatuchak, Pathumwan and Yannawa areas. The dust, about one seventh the width of a human hair, can cause breathing disorders and damage lung tissue.

TELEVISION

Digital TV may weed out political channels

Many political satellite TV channels have set up as communications tools for political parties, not only providing information about political movements but also fuelling the country's political divide, according to the national regulatory body the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC). When Thailand was slow to form a broadcasting regulator, the political TV operators took advantage of the opportunity of having no regulatory regime to oversee their channels

The global broadcasting industry has two systems: free TV via a terrestrial system and pay TV via satellite and cable platforms. In Thailand, free-to-air broadcasting via satellite emerged some 20 years ago in response to terrestrial TV's poor signal. Free TV stations spent a lot of money to expand signal transmission networks under a concession regime but budget limits meant that their signals could not cover every corner of the country. So people started using a satellite dish to receive signals, but satellite was not popular at first because the installation cost was at least 10,000 baht. Satellite TV finally took off around 2006, and the first political channel on the platform was ASTV, the pro-yellow-shirt channel. Thailand now has about 10 political TV channels airing via satellite, including ASTV, Asia Update and Blue Sky TV.

Audiences still prefer watching free TV to satellite TV. Out of 500 satellite TV channels, only 25 satellite TV channels have a viewership of more than 1% of the population, according to Nielsen Thailand. The speculation is that political TV channels on satellite will eventually lose popularity and may struggle to survive, however this year, the NBTC will award further digital TV licences for 12 public channels and 12 community-purpose channels, some of which could be related to politics.

AGRICULTURE

Farmers offloading vegetables outside of Bangkok

Many farmers and small suppliers are reluctant to go to Bangkok for fear of traffic congestion caused by the mass rallies. Farmers, especially from the western and northern provinces, are instead dumping their supply at deep price cuts at Srimuang wholesale market in Nakhon Pathom province which is one of the three main markets for fruits and vegetables in the central region. Farmers and suppliers are willing to sell to Srimuang even though it means 25-30% less revenue. The other two markets popular with farmers are Si Mum Muang and Talad Thai, both in Pathum Thani province.

Prices of fruits and vegetables in Bangkok may increase soon due to lower supply but the Internal Trade Department insists fruit and vegetable supplies are sufficient to meet demand. Prices also remain unchanged from a year before, while those of some vegetables have even fallen due to higher supply by the cool weather. The department is closely monitoring product price movements and has prepared measures to curb shortages or profiteering by vendors.
