India rice exports climb to record high, pledged rice stocks damaged by floods, fire & valentines gifts for lovers, digital & cheap.

A young man checks out a selection of Valentine’s Day gifts at Pak Khlong Talat, Bangkok’s biggest flower market. Traders say roses are selling at lower prices this year of 20-80 baht each and 150-250 baht a bunch, depending on the size of the bloom. Apichart Jinakul

India rice exports climb to record high

Bloomberg News agency

Rice shipments from India, the world’s largest producer of rice after China, will probably expand to a record high this year as buyers from Iran to Saudi Arabia boost purchases of aromatic basmati grain used in biryani and pilaf dishes. Exports are set to increase 7.8% to 11 million metric tons in the 12 months through March from a year earlier, with sales of basmati jumping 14% and non-basmati varieties 4 percent.  India supplies 65% of the overseas basmati rice market, while Pakistan accounts for the rest. Saudi Arabia and Iran are the two major buyers of Indian basmati, while Africa is a major destination for non-basmati varieties.

Shipments are increasing from India as Thailand, once the world’s biggest supplier, is also set to boost exports. The Southeast Asian country has built record stockpiles big enough to meet about a third of global import demand under a high-priced buying program that started in 2011. Farmers are demanding the government sell the stockpile to pay for their crops delivered last year.

The price of Thai 5% broken white rice, a benchmark grade, fell 23% in 2013, the most in at least five years, and was at $460 a ton yesterday. A slump to US$370 by March is possible as grain is offloaded from state granaries. Thailand may not be able to find enough buyers for its stockpiles because major importers in Africa and the Philippines increasingly prefer grain from Vietnam and India. The United States Department of Agriculture expects Thai inventories to reach a record 14.7 million tonnes this year, compared with 6.1 million in 2010.

Pledged rice stocks damaged by floods, fire

Caretaker Deputy Commerce Minister Yanyong Phuangrach yesterday conceded about 10 small warehouses where pledged rice was stored were found to have been damaged by fire and floods. The problem allegedly happened only with the warehouses in Uthai Thani, Lop Buri and Phetchabun, which housed rice pledged in 2011 and 2012 with the rice pledged from last year not being affected.

A fire broke out at a rice warehouse in Lop Buri’s Chai Badan district on Tuesday, which caretaker Deputy Commerce Minister Nattawut Saikuar said damaged about 200 sacks of rice. The incident raised suspicions there might be an attempt to cover up alleged irregularities in the government’s rice-pledging scheme.

Representatives of a rice farmer network yesterday submitted information involving alleged irregularity in the government’s rice pledging scheme to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC). Five rice mills allegedly committed misconduct, and information about them has been submitted to the NACC.
