New woman president for Stock Exchange of Thailand, 2G service must end by July says regulator & 2nd fire at infamous chemical waste factory.

The SET board has chosen Kesara Munchusree, the SET’s executive vice-president, to succeed Charamporn Jotikasthira, whose tenure will end on May 31.

STOCK EXCHANGE

New woman president for Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET)

Ms. Kesara Munchusree (53) has been chosen to become the 12th president of the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) and the third woman to take the helm. Ms Kesara has a political background and was head of the Thailand Futures Exchange (TFEX). Under her tenure at the TFEX, trading volume surged at a rapid clip to 16.7 million contracts last year from 199,000 contracts in 2006, when the derivatives exchange was founded. All five board members nominated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and some members who represent brokers are said to have backed Ms Kesara.

The SET’s current ambitious goal of setting up a new trading board for companies in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS), which includes Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam and southern China, should provide the impetus for the Thai stock exchange to become a key regional player. Even though the planned GMS trading board’s establishment is in very early stages, it is likely to become a reality as most of these stock exchanges are in the early phase of operations, with those in Cambodia and Laos having very few listed companies, so they need a more active trading channel to promote their stocks. Myanmar has no stock exchange yet.

MOBILE PHONES

2G service must end by July says regulator

Mobile operators True Move and Digital Phone Co (DPC), a unit of Advanced Info Service (AIS), transfer all existing 2G customers to other networks within three months by July before the 4G auction takes place in August, warned the telecommunications regulator the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC). Signals for these companies 2G SIM cards will be cut off after Sept 15.

True Move still has 7 million customers on 2G, down from 17 million last October. DPC has 13,000 users, down from 70,000 last year. The concessions of True Move and DPC from owner CAT Telecom expired last Sept 15. The NBTC allowed the two companies to retain their customers for another year after their concessions expired, but they are not allowed to acquire new subscribers. The NBTC believes only 3.1 million True Move customers are still active 2G users. Most are prepaid users.

The NBTC rejected True Move's proposal to transfer its existing 7 million subscribers to True's 3G networks by without customer consent. Last October True Move featured a promotion offering its existing 2G customers a free mobile handset if they migrated to its 3G network, which attracted 2 million customers. DPC is preparing to launch a similar campaign.

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY

Second fire at infamous chemical waste factory

A fire at a chemical waste recycling factory in Ratchaburi early Thursday morning destroyed three warehouses and their contents. The fire started at the Wax Garbage Recycling Centre about 5am in a building storing inflammable materials including recycled paints, plastic containers and gasoline, the source of bomb-like sounds during the inferno. Three of five warehouses at the factory complex and their contents were destroyed by the blaze. Police suspected it was started by an electrical short circuit. More than 10 fire trucks were sent to combat the flames.

The factory recycles industrial waste such as plastic pellets, dish washer liquid, paints and other chemical materials. The factory earlier had problems with surrounding communities with complaints of water pollution and foul odours. The factory was also hit by a fire on March 16.
