China to open consulate in Phuket to help tourists

China will open a consulate in Phuket to provide consular services for the growing number of Chinese tourists visiting there. The consulate is necessary because 10.7 million Chinese people travelled to Thailand last year and as many as 1 million Chinese visited Phuket and the number of Chinese visitors to Phuket is expected to double this year.

The Chinese consul in Phuket would protect the interests of Chinese tourists and also contact and protect Chinese expatriates there. Phuket authorities have taken steps to take good care of Chinese tourists such as special Chinese-language signs at Phuket airport. Phuket is also a sister city to many cities of China and there have also been exchange students between the two countries for bilateral studies of culture and traditions.

Tesco Lotus opens Khon Kaen distribution centre

Tesco Lotus has opened its first regional distribution centre in Khon Kaen province to support business growth and serve customers in the Northeast. The distribution centre will serve more than 300 Tesco Lotus stores of all formats in the northeastern region, from the smallest Express marts to the biggest Extra stores and the centre will handle about 1 million cases of products a week, with the capacity to handle up to 3 million.  With a service area of 52,000 square metres and an investment of 2.5 billion baht, the centre will be one of the country's biggest distribution centres. The project has already created nearly 1,000 new jobs in the local area.

Tesco Lotus has four other distribution centres, all in the Central region, servicing nearly 1,700 stores in Thailand. The focus of the regional distribution centre has been to get products closer to customers, and to improve availability of products on the shelves. By setting up the distribution centre up in Khon Kaen, there has also been a reduction in the number of trucks used which used to travel 400,000 kilometres every week. This is a major reduction in carbon emissions. The centre has been designed to similar standards as top warehouses in Britain and Europe, using the latest innovations and distribution technology. The centre was built under an eco-friendly concept with a wide range of energy-saving equipment.

Mall Group building new malls in Bangkok, Phuket & Hua Hin

Despite the negative economic outlook, The Mall Group, arch-rival of retail giant Central Group, has announced a huge investment that will involve ploughing 60 billion baht into the development of six megaprojects. The Mall Group built its first department store 33 years ago in Bangkok's Ratchadamri area. After that, the group moved from department stores to luxury shopping complexes, developing The Emporium on Sukhumvit Road in 1997 and Siam Paragon in Siam Square six years later.

About 20 billion baht will be used to develop Bangkok Mall on a 100-rai plot opposite Bitec convention centre on Bang Na-Trat Road. Bang Na-Trat Road, which leads to the east of the country, also boasts several shopping malls such as Central Bangna, Megabangna and Seacon Square. The construction of Bangkok Mall will begin at the end of this year and take about three years to complete. The Philippines has the Mall of Asia, there's Dubai Mall in Dubai and the Mall of America in the United States and in a similar fashion Bangkok Mall will be next.

Another 20 billion baht has been earmarked for the construction of Blu Pearl, a resort mall located on a 150-rai plot close to CentralFestival in Phuket. The rest will be spent on the development of Blu Port, a mall in Hua Hin and The EmQuartier, a shopping complex opposite The Emporium in Bangkok. The funds will be also used to build The Emsphere, next to the Imperial Queen's Park Hotel and for a major facelift of The Emporium. The renovation of The Emporium and the opening of The EmQuartier are set for the end of this year, while the rest of the projects will be ready for operation in 2017. The EmQuartier and EmSphere would not be just shopping complexes but also an office, residential and entertainment venue.

Thailand has a target of 40 million inbound tourists in the next five years traveling to popular destination cities such as Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya, Hua Hin and Chiang Mai. Meanwhile, Central Pattana Plc, a Central Group developer, is set to renovate its shopping complexes, while Seacon Development Co has announced a 15-billion baht multi-purpose project on Srinakarin Road and set aside 1 billion baht for the expansion of The Nine project adjacent to Seacon Square.
