Japanese carmaker Nissan has come up with what it claims to be the world's first self-cleaning paintwork which can repel mud and everyday dirt. AIS says 3G network covers 95% of the nation

Advanced Info Service (AIS), the country's largest mobile operator, currently has a network covering 95% of the population. With 17,000 3G base stations, after investing 60 billion baht, the company claims to have the most 3G base stations of any mobile phone operator. The company also plans to spend another 1 billion baht installing thousands of small mobile cell sites to increase network capacity in high-density usage areas in major cities. AIS plans to rely on its network strength and after-sales service to sustain its leading position in the local mobile market.

Since the company started 3G mobile broadband service last year, mobile data usage has surged by almost 300% thanks to the popularity of social networks and video content services. Average revenue per 3G user is 20-30% higher than a 2G customer. AIS expects 75% of its 42 million subscribers to have 3G service this year. As of March 31, AIS had 26 million 3G customers.  AIS has 14 million mobile internet users. Thailand expects over 30 million mobile internet users this year, up from 24 million last year.

The company is preparing to launch its own 3G-enabled mobile phone priced below 800 baht to attract low-end prepaid customers migrating to 3G service. AIS is spending 350 million baht to give away free smartphones to its customers, plus free data tariff plans and mobile applications. AIS customers who want these privileges can dial *00333# tomorrow only from 9am to noon.

New 500-baht banknote

dpa News agency

The Central Bank has issued a new, modernised 500-baht banknote with new safeguards to make forgery more difficult. The new banknote is the same size as the old one and its overall colour remains  purple.  The new note also has features that make it easier for blind people to differentiate it from other denominations

The new banknote will enter circulation next Monday. The old banknote, which has been used over the past 12 years, remains valid and the new 500-baht notes will gradually replace the older notes over the next two years. Thailand has a low level of fake banknotes in circulation,  at five to one million, fewer than US dollars and the euro at 40 to one million.
