  • Paella for Passion

14/03/2010 : Philippe A Derrien, executive chef of the Grand Millennium Sukhumvit, hails from the small town of Quimper in France and has had a passion for cooking since the age of 14. He started his career in 1989 as Chef de Partie at the five-star Fairmont Hotel in Canada. A few years later at the age of 25, he became executive chef at the Pacific Club Hong Kong, supervising the food and beverage operations of five restaurants and nine function rooms of the establishment.

  • Spice up your health

14/03/2010 : Thailand's tropical climate often brings quick fluctuations in temperature. It can be stiflingly hot before it rains, and when the rainfall comes at night chilly mornings may be followed by hot and muggy weather later in the day.

  • WHY Wine

    A Chilean tragedy

12/03/2010 : The first estimates indicate that the Chilean wine industry lost about $250 million as a result of the terrible 8.8-magnitude earthquake that devastated the central region on February 27. About 14 million cases of wine, representing about 12 percent of last year's total production, could be lost.

  • EATING Out

    Beyond expectations

12/03/2010 : Because human senses are often manipulated by our minds, I really can't say that my own expectation did not effect my personal impression when I dined at Bliss, a three-month-old contemporary European restaurant in Sukhumvit Soi 31. So to be fair, I'll start this review by sharing some of the comments from my dining companions who were keen restaurant-goers themselves: "This soup deserves a perfect 10. I'd like more", "The curry sauce has a banana tang - strange but yummy!" and "I've never had such a delicious fruity foie gras dish before. The chef is such a talent."

  • Redefining art

12/03/2010 : The charm and beauty of Phuket, "the Pearl of the Andaman", attracts visitors from all over the world. With easy access, five-star hotels and resorts, good quality local and international restaurants and the well-known hospitality of Thai people, this paradise island is now permanently on the map of international travellers.

  • Champagne weekend wine dinner

12/03/2010 : Mme Carol Duval-Leroy, president of Champagne Duval-Leroy, will be launching her organic AB Blanc de Blancs at a wine dinner at Six Senses Hideaway Hua Hin on Saturday, March 20.

  • SUNDAY Brunch

    Small is beautiful

12/03/2010 : It may be relatively small in size. But JW Marriott's Sunday brunch, housed in the 180-seat Marriott Cafe, is no Mickey Mouse in the land of Goliaths. Compared with Centara Grand at CentralWorld's 450-seater that spreads over 2,000 square metres, Four Seasons's almost 2,000-square-metre big brunch venue and Pan Pacific's 300-seat Panorama, one might wonder if the weekend buffet affair offered at this medium-size hotel in Phloen Chit is worth spending on. But it really was one of the most popular in town, and what's on offer here could simply make its extra large counterparts a bit shy.

  • Roll out the salmon and oyster

07/03/2010 : Chef Hiroaki Ikeda combines traditional methods with contemporary flavours to create his signature dishes. Mr Ikeda, Japanese chef of The Westin Grande Sukhumvit's top flight restaurant Kisso, has more than 27 years' experience specialising in Japanese cuisine and it is a passion that has taken him to exotic destinations such as Japan, France, Singapore and Thailand. Prior to his spell here, Mr Ikeda was based at the Royal Orchid Sheraton Bangkok and Hilton International Bangkok.

  • Return to the brass age

07/03/2010 : So much in our lives works in cycles. We retire things we've used for years and grown tired of, replace them with something new, and then come to miss the originals, which we recruit back into service, their attractions revived. This principle can be seen in the cycles of fashionability that revolve around clothing, furniture, styles of decoration, movie genres and much else.
