Is there a better way to learn about our beloved city other than to look at art pieces from the past?

The Bangkok Art and Culture Centre is showcasing a slice of Bangkok's past, present and future through works of art. The exhibition, on until February 15 of next year, takes us back to 1782 when Bangkok was officially established as a new capital, through a journey of time. It is an opportunity for fellow Bangkokians and historical enthusiasts alike to see and learn more about the history of the city itself, as reflected in art pieces created since the dawn of Bangkok. The exhibition illustrates how a group of artists view the city at present and how they envision the city to look like in the future.

In these past 200 years, Bangkok has rapidly gone through successive periods of change. The city's grandeur, mode of life, beliefs as well as political and economic importance is inseparable from the life of the country itself. The serene beauty of nature, river life and the glorification of traditional art inherited from the Ayudhya period (14th to early 18th century) are dominant features evident in the early artworks during the Ratanakosin era with inner Bangkok as its setting.
Krungthep 226 is an attempt to explore and disclose how Bangkok has physically and spiritually changed since its establishment, as recorded by artists in their artworks. The event is comprised of two major parts: Visual art and related activities.

The visual art exhibition consists of four zones occupying the gallery space (7th and 8th Floor). The four zones are: Bangkok's Early Days, Modernised Bangkok versus Nostalgic Past, New Bangkok Skyline and Dream Bangkok.
Related activities include Bangkok on Films, featuring old documentaries and modern feature films; Bangkok in Literature, art catalogues and a reading room full of historical references concerning Bangkok; Bangkok in Theatre, artists as seen in plays by different generations of theatre groups, a seminar on related topics to the making and changing of Bangkok by art historians, anthropologists and workshops for children and the general public on related topics.

The event presents with the aid of distinctive design elements, to enhance the storytelling of Bangkok with its complex layers of history. The design team has duly made the effort to create an exhibition environment that conveys to Bangkok audiences of the past, present and future.
