Thai-UK Education Fund

The British Council will be granting research and development funds in any field of study, to encourage cooperation between educational institutions in Thailand and the UK.

Founded in 2008, the Thai-UK Higher Education and Further Education Fund has targeted institutions at vocational and higher education levels. Applicants must be from these institutions and funds are awarded on the condition that Thai educational institutions team up with others in the UK to raise the potential for educational development and research to a world class level.

The amount given for each project is between 10,000-40,000 (514,400 to 2 million baht.

The scheme is now entering its second year. Last year, funding was given to 11 projects in Thailand. One research project chosen was a collaboration between Kasetsart University and the University of Leeds which focused on forecasting the impact of global climate change on biological diversity.

If any institution has a problem in finding a UK partner, the British Council can help recommend ones that are best suited for your project. Interested applicants can submit their proposals from April to June.

GSK research funds

GlaxoSmithKline (Thailand) Limited will offer between six and eight awards, worth $250,000 (about 9 million baht) each, for research projects on breast cancer.

The project, known as GSK Oncology International Ethnic Research Initiative, is an international research fund for researchers in Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa.

The number of women suffering from breast cancer in these parts of the world are sharply increasing, while most research projects have been done in Western countries.

The proposed projects must not involve clinical research, but general studies involving epidemiology of breast cancer, risk assessment or other contributing factors of the disease among diverse ethnic populations.

First launched in 2008, the fund attracted 23 applicants from 14 countries last year.

Anyone interested, please submit their letters of intent from now till May 2, 2009.

For more information, contact GSK ERI centre at 02-6593037, or email to ittichai.x.vatchareecoup @gsk.com.
