Head to Hank's

Bigger is better at Henry J. Beans

You'll hear Christmas songs, you'll hear classic party music, you might even hear some Elvis but one sound that's definitely absent is the rumbling of tummies. No one goes hungry here. Henry J. Beans is a classic American diner, which means everything is big: huge plates of wings, 750g T-bones, two-hander tacos and giant glasses of margarhita. Go alone if you dare, but it's best to share.

Henry J. Beans - 'friends call him Hank' - sits under the Amari Watergate hotel in Pratunam. This lively and colourful district is a magnet for tourists and bargain hunters as there's little you can't find in the surrounding sois and malls. Weary shoppers could do much worse than heading to Hank's during the holiday season as this is where the party's at.

Decked in retro-hip Americana - old Miller and Buick signs, Route 66 markers - the bar has a relaxed and friendly vibe, enhanced by two daily happy hours. From 5.30 to 7pm and 11 til midnight you'll get two for every one standard drink you order. The menu is everything you'd expect: ribs n' wings, sizzling fajitas, delicious salmon steaks, glistening T-bones and shrimp and guacamole tacos. The best advice is to get messy; grab those ribs and dig in.

Christmas begins whenever you want at Hank's. The bar can cater for private parties for your family or your colleagues, so you can book a space for 20 or book the entire place and invite 399 or your friends. The first Friday of every month features an Elvis night, where you can catch the likes of faux-Elvis extraordinaire Ritchie Newton, and every night the house band rocks from 8.30 til late.

Don't believe the rumours: Santa is real and will be hanging out at Henry's on Christmas Eve, and will probably order the traditional roast turkey with all the trimmings. He may even kick back after work on Christmas Day, enjoying the bar's sports coverage and party atmosphere. Both days feature an extended happy hour, from 11pm til 2am, so designate Boxing Day as hangover time, and watch the best premiere league games on Hank's big screens.

New Year's Eve is party time at the Amari. The hotel is just along from the huge celebrations at Central World Plaza so Hank's will make a great base for your revelry. The party band will play all your favourites, and here's a tip: dress up. The bar is hosting a mask party, and best costume will win accomodation prizes across Amari Watergate's many sister hotels throughout Thailand.

Of course the hotel's other outlets are hosting special events this holiday season. Lobby-level restaurant Cascade has seasonal treats prepared by their French pastry chef, plus visits from Santa and his carol singers on Christmas Day. Thai on 4 has a special menu designed by renowned consultant chef Khun Ajarn Srisamorn Kongphan, and the riches of Chinese cuisine can be found at Heichinrou which has all you can eat dim sum lunch buffets and whole Peking ducks for dinner.

And while we're talking of Christmas...forgotten Auntie's present? Don't know what to buy your boss? Don't panic. Save the day by ordering an Amari festive hamper. Prices start at 1,900 baht for a selection of Chiang Mai macadamia cookies, macarons, chocolates, teas and other sweet gifts. For those who deserve more pampering, gift sets are available from the hotel's Breeze Spa. Choose from scrubs, lotions, gels and various ointments and unguents for the soul.

So grab your loved ones, grab your friends and colleagues, and head to Hank's. Just don't forget your appetite.
