The ‘PTT Thai Chess Competition 2013’ is open to players of all ages.

The knights are called horses and the rooks are called boats, and that's just part of what distinguishes Thai chess from the version played internationally.

Those skilled at the traditional game that has been part of the Kingdom's heritage for 700 years will come together to compete at the "PTT Thai Chess Competition 2013", where prizes worth 1.5 million baht in total will be on offer. Held under the theme of "Thai Chess: It is more than you can see and think", the competition has four categories: children and youths aged eight to 25 years, individuals (professional or amateur), VIP guests, and clubs and teams.

The competition will take place in four regions _ Central, North, Northeast and South _ and 250 contestants from each region will qualify to enter the final round, which is scheduled for Aug 30 to Sept 1 at the PTT headquarters in Bangkok.

The regional rounds will take place as follows: At PTT headquarters on Vibhavadi-Rangsit Road on May 18-19 (Central), Chiang Mai Grand View Hotel and Convention Centre in Chiang Mai on June 1-2 (North), Kosa Hotel in Khon Kaen on July 6-7 (Northeast), and Siam Thani Hotel in Surat Thani on July 20-21 (South).
