The Sahaviriya Bangkok Triathlon and Duathlon will take place on July 7. Rama VIII Bridge is the focal point for activities.
If you think you're in perfect health and wish to test your stamina, the upcoming Sahaviriya Bangkok Triathlon might be just the challenge you've been looking for.
Organised by the Raj Pracha Samasai Foundation, it is scheduled to take place in Bangkok on July 7. Funds raised at this year's event, the fifth held to date, will be used to support the foundation's charity programmes for leprosy patients and children whose parents have been affected by HIV.
This year's international triathlon comprises a 1.85km "Swim the River of Kings" section, a 55km "Bike the Corridor of Marvels" course and a 10km "Run the Streets of Smiles".
The swimming segment will be held in the Chao Phraya River, starting near Rama VIII Bridge.
The 55km cycling section will take athletes to the top of the Boromratchonnanee elevated road, a four-lane expressway (closed to traffic for the duration) which offers tremendous views of western Bangkok and the countryside beyond.
The final component of the triathlon, the 10km run, will take participants through Suan Luang Rama VIII Park and over Rama VIII Bridge. The event is open to individuals and relay teams with a swimmer, cyclist and runner. There is also a sprint-distance variant which comprises an 800m swim, a 22.5km cycling segment and a 5km run.
Those who are keen on cycling and running but not so fond of swimming can put their names down for the duathlon. The standard category consists of a 5km run, a 55km bike ride and a 10km run, while the sprint version features a 22.5km bike ride and a 5km run. Both are open to individual athletes or relay teams comprising a cyclist and runner. The registration fee is 2,200 baht per individual racer (4,000 baht for overseas athletes) and 5,000 baht per team. Registration should be made via www.goadventureasia.com/BKT/bkt.htm on or before July 2.
