Information

Buffaloes have had a lasting influence on Thai culture and beliefs and historically have represented positive attributes. A leading young Thai artist will pay tribute to the animals in his solo exhibition which opens on Saturday. The upcoming "Buffalo's Heart" showcases photos and mosaics by Maitree Siriboon, an artist from the Isan region who uses the buffalo as a symbol from a cultural and historical perspective. It was partly through the buffalo's hard work that Thailand became into a rice-farming nation and then into the modern nation it is today. "Today, however, we hardly see buffaloes working in the rice fields, and yet they remain one of the most respected animals in Thailand," said Maitree. "Their numbers are decreasing rapidly, and they now have assumed new roles as decorative items, family pets, a source of food and as a cultural icon for tourism purposes." The 30-year-old artist has had his works shown extensively internationally. He often combines his inner childhood memories with contemporary dreams to create a new, imaginary world of beauty using the traditional "mirror collage technique". Buffalo’s Heart will be on show at Thavibu Gallery from Saturday until July 13. The opening is on Saturday at5pm, followed by a performance which includes a video screening and live Isanmusicanddances. The gallery is located on the 4th floor of Silom Galleria and is open Monday to Saturday from 11am to 7pm. Call 02-266-5454.
