Picturing happiness

Striking and intriguing examples of happiness can be seen at the National Gallery during the 15th "Panasonic Contemporary Painting Exhibition".

The show features a selection of 54 paintings from 178 entries sent to a competition organised by Panasonic Siew Sale (Thailand) and Silpakorn University.

The paintings show the artists' points of view and reflect society under the concept of "For the happiness of mankind".

The competition winner was Fighting Cat, an oil on canvas painting reflecting the image of a strong woman with freedom and happiness in her career. The painting is by last year's winner Anchalee Arayapongpanich, the first person to win the competition two years in a row.

Second prize was shared between Yamilah Hayee's Thread of Happiness and Desire and Prawit Lumcharoen's Iron Man No.3. The first is a sewing piece portraying the happiness gained from self-satisfaction. The latter is an oil on canvas painting about human beings' obsession with materialism.

The 15th Panasonic Contemporary Painting Exhibition is on display at the National Gallery from today until July 31. The gallery is located on Chao Fa Road and opens Wednesday to Sunday from9amto 4pm. For more details, call 02-731-8888 or 02-375-4111.
