Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic musical South Pacific will be given a minimalist twist when Mahidol University's Music Theatre Department hits the stage next week.
More than 30 of the university's singers will perform "South Pacific in Concert" in shows at Siam Society on July 24 and Mahidol's Salaya campus on July 25, both starting at 7pm.
This is not a full production of the musical as there will be no sets, props or costumes. Instead, this concert version includes musical highlights from South Pacific interspersed with dialogue and narration as a segue between songs.
The performance will feature narration, musical and stage direction by Corey Trahan, with choreography by Sadanunta Banhansupavat and pianists Yossaral Songkiattikul and Natiwit Klongmeekhun.
South Pacific, composed by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, has won five Tony awards, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and has been a favourite on Broadway and London's West End. Movie and television versions have also proven popular.
Tickets for the July 24 concert cost 400 baht (300 baht for Siam Society members and 50 baht for students). Admission for the July 25 performance is free.
