Bangkok-based South African artist Lizelle Engelbrecht will reflect on how her experience of living in and travelling through Southeast Asia has influenced her artistic mind in "Visual Diaries". The exhibition is a collaboration of charcoal drawings and oil paintings that are all visual representations of Engelbrecht's life, existence, memory and experiences from living and travelling throughout the region. All aspects of its colours, people, landscapes and cultures have inspired her. The 30-year-old has documented personal, inspirational and significant settings from countries including Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Nepal, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia. Each drawing and painting is a unique "visual diary" of a certain memory or feeling that represents a significant experience in her life. "Living in Southeast Asia has opened my eyes in so many ways, and these adventures have inspired a desire to express myself, and to record the reactions of my personality to the current world I live in," Engelbrecht says. The artist from Cape Town has been drawing and painting since a very early age, and received formal training in fine art at the Stellenbosch University, South Africa. She currently lives and works in Bangkok. Visual Diaries will be on show at Neilson Hays Library’s Rotunda& Garden Cafe galleries from Sept 3-29. The opening reception is on Sept 6 at 7pm. The library opens Tuesday to Sunday An oil painting by Lizelle Engelbrecht. from 9.30am to 5pm. Call 02233-1731.
