Doppel, a live-painting duo from Japan, will give a Bangkok debut exhibition at Artery Post-Modern Gallery tomorrow.
The “I&I” exhibition displays a dozen oil on canvas paintings under the theme “Iconic Hero”.
Recognised as one of the pioneers of the Japanese live-painting culture, Doppel have been working with the concept of “expression being pursued in the unit of two persons who are not society, nor an individual”.
They’ve created a painting collaboration in the same way as an improvisation by a jazz band, by fusing an entire surrounding ambience into their painting session.

The duo have worked in various situations, from live-painting at club parties and festivals, to murals and installations for shops and public walls.
Their works have fused with different influences and fragments from various aspects. Even though Doppel’s activity is deeply rooted with a scene of club party experiences, their later works have stepped further into more culture accumulations and fusing with an environment in particular locations.
Founded in 2001, Doppel comprises Bakibaki (Kohei Yamao) and Mon (Koutaro Ooyama) and their clients count Sony, Nike, Toyota and Facebook among others.
‘I&I’ will be on display at Artery Post-Modern Gallery from tomorrow to March 8. The opening reception tomorrow is at 7pm and will feature a live painting session with DJ Alexface as special guest. The gallery is on Silom Soi 19 and opens Monday to Saturday, 9am to 7pm. Call 02-635-3133/4 or 085-917-8891.
