The physicality of the worn, overlooked and often grim details of a city’s infrastructure are reflected in Rabin Satianpitayakul’s paintings, due to be displayed for the first time at H Gallery next month. Outsized and possessing endlessly compelling surfaces, Rabin’s works appear as fragments of the urban environment. Here, dense architectural details and encrusted surfaces are given monumental treatment. “Blocked On The Inside” is titled after a statement from one of Rabin’s works and points to the seeming impenetrability of his paintings’ surfaces. Figure and ground coagulate on an unyielding terrain that confronts us with the fascinations of details and detritus. Rabin’s works return us to the visceral and physical potential of contemporary painting; challenging artificial boundaries between the conceptual and expressive and representational and abstracted. And, most sharply, they provide a contemporary take on monumentality — urban, chaotic and yet surprisingly intimate. Rabin is a lecturer on the multimedia design programme at Silpakorn University. He graduated with a BA and MFA from RMIT University in Australia. He has taught at numerous art schools and has exhibited locally and internationally. 'Blocked On The Inside' will be on show at H Gallery from May 1-31. The opening party is on May 1 at 6pm. The gallery is located on Sathon Soi 12 and opens Wednesday to Monday from 10am to 6pm.
