Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO), conducted by Gudni A Emilsson, will celebrate the 150th birthday anniversary of German composer Richard Strauss with two performances set for tomorrow at 7pm and Saturday at 4pm. The “150 Years of Richard Strauss” concert will take place at the orchestra’s new performance venue — Prince Mahidol Hall of Mahidol University, Salaya campus. Joining the TPO as guest soloist will be world-renowned oboist Christoph Hartmann of the prestigious Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, who will be performing Concerto In D-Major For Oboe And Small Orchestra by Strauss. The concerto is one of the most important and frequently performed works of the oboe repertoire. Written in 1945, the three-movement work highlights the wide capabilities of the instrument. In addition to the demands for breath control (oboists are daunted by the 57 bar opening passage with no rest) and technical facility, Strauss composed lyrical and charming melodies that exploit the vocal quality of the instrument. - Tickets cost 300 and 500 baht (100 baht for students) and can be purchased from Thai Ticket Major booths (www.thaiticketmajor.com or call 02-262-3456), online at www.msticket.music.mahidol.ac.th. - Call 02-800-2525–34 ext 153/4.
