Discover Muay Chaiya, Thailand's resurgent martial art

Recently, the popularity of boxing has swelled in Thailand after the Olympic glory of Kaew Pongprayoon and the international fame and success of Thai kickboxer Buakaw. And while Muay Thai has already been well-known internationally for some years now, very few have heard of Muay Chaiya, an important branch of authentic and traditional Muay Thai. In the name of journalism (and kicking ass), we took a Muay Chaiya class in an attempt to better understand what this form of martial art is all about.
WHAT IS IT?
The origins of Muay Chaiya lie in - you guessed it - Chaiya district in Surat Thani province. Today's modern Muay Thai evolved from various styles of fighting from different parts of Thailand, for example Muay Lop Buri, Muay Phra Nakhon, Muay Korat, and of course Muay Chaiya.
