French connection for graffiti face-off

The writing's on the wall _ Thai graffiti artist Alex Face is teaming up with his French counterpart Jace to turn the 1st floor of Alliance Francaise Bangkok into a work of art.

Watch the artists work on the 1st floor of Alliance Francaise on Sathon Road from Monday until Jan 31. After that the ‘‘Entre´e Libre’’ exhibition will be on display for three months. Free admission. Call 02-670-4231.

From Monday, they will work for four days individually and together on an exhibition called "Entree Libre", meaning free admission, reviving and transforming the walls of seven rooms in the former offices of the Embassy of France's Department of Cooperation and Culture.

Street art fans are welcome to come along and watch them work during the four days.

On Jan 31, an opening night event will be held, with the two teaming up to create work, merging their distinct styles into a unique art piece as visitors watch. Alex Face, whose real name is Patcharapol Tangruen, is a well-known and influential graffiti artist in Thailand whose architecture studies and curiosity led him to seek out abandoned buildings with surfaces where he could express himself.

He created the character of Alex Face, who has an aged, disillusioned child's face and wears animal costumes, and has become known for his images of penguins. Through his art, he attempts to create links with the urban population, the underprivileged of Bangkok and the provinces.

Jace is a French graffiti artist originally from Le Havre in northern France who has lived on Reunion Island since he was nine years old.

But Jace is Gouzou, a humorous, faceless character who remains fearless under any climate, in any circumstance and in any country. Jace's passion for drawing and dream of an underground lifestyle prompted him to specialise in graffiti art.

He has been fascinated by the idea of transforming advertising posters, and has exhibited his work in many countries.

Eager to protect his freedom of expression, Jace no longer wants to express himself solely through Gouzou, so expect surprises during the exhibition at Alliance Francaise.
