Fund-raising seminar for Haiyan survivors

Major relief efforts to help survivors of Typhoon Haiyan are now under way in the Philippines. In order to raise donations to help affected people as well as to raise awareness about climate change and its environmental impact, Chulalongkorn University's Social Research Institute, with the assistance of Focus on the Global South and Filipino alumni, is holding a seminar titled "Typhoon Haiyan: Losses and Tears in the Philippines, Who's Next?".

The seminar will be held on Nov 29 from 9am-noon in Room 202, 2nd floor, Aroon Sorathet Building, Faculty of Engineering.

Philippines Ambassador Jocelyn Batoon-Garcia will be the keynote speaker. There will also be talks by Prof Dr Ursula Oswald Spring, Mexico's former minister of environmental development, Prof Surichai Wungaeo, director of the Rotary Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies, Prof Supang Chantavanich, director of Chulalongkorn University's Asian Research Centre for Migration, Dr Narumon Arunotai, assistant director of the Social Research Institute, Faikham Hannarong from the Thai Working Group for Climate Justice and Dorothy-Grace Guerrero, from the Climate and Environment Justice programme from Focus on the Global South and the representative of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Thailand.

As part of this event, an oil painting titled Look Chao Suan (A Farmer's Daughter) by Sangvorn Nattayai, co-founder of the Patong artists club, is on auction via facebook.com/ paintingforauction until Nov 26. The auction's result will be officially announced during the seminar.
