Postcards have never lost their charm, at least in the eyes of Kamthorn Paowattanasuk.

The photographer is still in love with the traditional way of communication, which has been left behind in this high-speed era, where broadband technology allows us to correspond with people all over the world in real time.

“Postcards don’t have to be received in a flash and are evidence that prove where we were when we sent them,” said Kamthorn.

He will showcase a collection of 20 postcards he collected during his journeys around Thailand during the “Postcards from Thailand” photo exhibition at RMA Institute next week.

Inspired by the hand-colouring technique of photographs which was most popular from the mid- to late-19th century, he chose to “paint” the black-and-white postcards using Photoshop. He wants the photos to show viewers how he lived in the places he visited in his beloved country.

Kamthorn likes the nature of a postcard because it provides space for only a few sentences.

“This makes us think carefully about we’re going to write,” he said.

‘Postcards from Thailand’ will show at RMA Institute from May 8-June 8. The art space is located on Sukhumvit Soi 22 (Soi Sainamthip 2) and is open Tues-Sun from 9.30pm to 7pm. Call 02-663-0809.
