It's been noted frequently in recent years that we know more about the surface of the moon than we do about marine life on our own planet.
Until the 1950s, the pitch-black depths of the world's oceans were presumed to be zones devoid of all life, but deep-sea explorations enabled by new equipment plus advances in biotechnology have exposed that notion as a myth.
The Census of Marine Life, a 10-year project, involving 2,700 scientists and 80 nations, which ended in 2010, is the most comprehensive fact-finding mission carried out to date on the biodiversity of Earth's oceans.
