The Expert in Holistic Care

GENERAL

The lifestyles of people today differ greatly from how they used to be in the past. Many things have changed -- the environment, residency, food, and eating behaviors are some examples -- and many of these factors impact people’s health. It is also important to note that the characteristics of certain diseases vary between different people. That is why a comprehensive treatment is beneficial in coping with the variations in illnesses.

Holistic treatment requires the knowledge, experience, and expertise of doctors and medical specialists in various branches collaborating to support each other in every step working with each patient.

Dr. Num Tanthuwanit, Chief Executive Officer of Bumrungrad International Hospital, notes that Thailand is becoming an aging society. It is estimated that by 2040, the nation will have roughly 20 million citizens  who are over the age of  60, and each on average can live for an additional  20-30 years. To achieve the best outcomes, medical treatment of these people should be provided by hospitals that offer a comprehensive patient-care system. In 2015, Bumrungrad International Hospital opened the New Life Healthy Aging Clinic to support holistic treatment for the elderly, as its main focus.

The New Life Healthy Aging Clinic provides both general health care and specific counseling on various chronic diseases -- diabetes, high blood pressure, and diseases associated with advanced age, such as Parkinson's disease, dementia and osteoporosis. In addition, the new clinic offers treatment for body function issues such as balance and movement control, bowel control, managing nutrition, weight loss and appetite loss. Preventative care is also available.

"An elderly individual needs the integration of medical care. Before undergoing treatment by specialist team, we conduct a comprehensive health assessment focusing on the general conditions of the patient, such as the risk of malnutrition or the risks of slips and falls. A screening test for premature memory loss and depression is also administered. A team of medical experts, specializing in different branches then treats the illness in conjunction with a nursing team that includes nutritionists, physiotherapists, and pharmacists. We have the pharmaceutical system in place to arrange the appropriate prescriptions.  Advising how to rearrange the home environment for safety and providing palliative care are all part of our holistic approach," said Dr. Num Tanthuwanit.

"In striving to sharpen the expertise and development of personnel in all sectors of the hospital, Bumrungrad has launched the "Simulation Training Center" for medical personnel to achieve proficiency in patient care and be able to operate to the highest safety standards during all stages of patient care.

"The Simulation Training Centre consists of computerized models for both children and adults which are capable of displaying signs of various physical conditions and symptoms -- from normal health to initial sickness to critical illnesses. The computer program is able to propose over 60 health condition scenarios".

As the largest private hospital in Southeast Asia, with a capacity of 580 beds, Bumrungrad International Hospital was the first Joint Commissions International (JCI) accredited hospital in Asia. Comprising 30 medical specialist centers, the hospital has over 1,200 medical professionals of various disciplines, and approximately 4,800 staff members who serve more than 1.1 million patients each year. Awarded "Best International Hospital of the Year 2015" by International Medical Travel Journal: IMTJ, Bumrungrad also provides medical services to approximately 520,000 foreign patients from 190 countries around the world.

Of "Top 10 Hospitals in the World" by ontoplists.com, Bumrungrad was ranked 9th at the beginning of 2015.
