This fine lady, resplendent in her traditional dress, was more or less holding court at a small souvenir market near Doi Mae Salong to the north of Chiang Rai. A member of the Akha tribe whose roots are in China and who migrated to Thailand in the 19th century, she seemed to be generally ordering people around. When she saw me with a camera in hand, she treated me to this big, beaming smile. With their impressive headgear and jewellery, the Akha are just one of the several hill tribes that populate this area of Thailand.
