Grains of Life

School Rice fills the stomach with quality jasmine rice, fills the soul with philanthropy and fills rural villagers' heart with hope for a better life

Rice has always been the staple food of the Thai people, and it plays a crucial role as it is the essence of Thai life as well as a pillar of the economy. Rice has fed millions of stomachs and now it is feeding the brains of the students at Mechai Pattana School in Buri Ram.

Founded in 2009, the school is an extraordinary example of how education and community development can go hand-in-hand. Built for the purpose of eradicating poverty as well as educating the local children, the school has changed the lives of the students, their parents and everyone living in the community.

"Mechai Pattana School is not just a school _ it is a lifelong learning centre for everyone in the community," explained Mechai Viravaidya, who founded the school. He added that most schools are underused, as students only go to school 200 days per year.
