When it comes to cash for votes, the windfall is fleeting and the bill falls due all too quickly

The arrival last Tuesday of Lek came completely out of the blue. "I'm here to do business!" he announced on my doorstep at 11pm, making me wonder exactly what business he was intending to perform at that hour. "And I came to see you!"
I know that's rubbish. His Bangkok visit has nothing to do with any desperate need to see me, his one and only farang friend of more than 15 years.
It has more to do with the fact that for a few brief days early this past week, Lek, like vast swathes of the rural population, was unusually wealthy.
