HEALTH FOR ALL
Coenzyme Q-10, commonly known as Co Q-10, is a quinine derivative that is found in living organisms, especially in the heart, liver and kidneys. It can be regarded as a vitamin. About half a century ago, it was found that Co Q-10 has antioxidant properties and can prevent premature ageing in cells. Co Q-10 can be found in small amounts in food such as meat and fish.
The level of Co Q-10 in our body will drop as we grow older or if we have a condition such as heart disease, Parkinson's disease or asthma. The lower level of Co Q-10 is not caused by these diseases, and it doesn't mean that taking more Co Q-10 will cure them either. Certain kinds of medicine, such as statin, beta blockers for high blood pressure and some anti-depressants, can also lower the Co Q-10 level, but that does not necessarily mean undesirable effects.
Co Q-10 is said to help treat and prevent some diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, HIV/Aids, asthma, Parkinson's disease, some types of cancer, lung disease, gum disease and migraine as well as chronic fatigue syndrome. Moreover, it is said to help with memory and possess anti-ageing properties. These benefits are not yet recognised by the Food and Drug Administration in the US, but in Japan Co Q-10 has been used to treat heart and coronary diseases for some time.
