Cyclists getting their message across

While much of the country was still confused about the government's first-car tax rebate policy, last Sunday thousands of cyclists from across Bangkok gathered at Sanam Luang, the vast open ground in front of the Grand Palace, to attend the "Bangkok Car Free Day 2011" event.

Co-organised by the Thai Cycling for Health Association and several parties including the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the event, the 5th of its kind, took place simultaneously with similar gatherings of cyclists in 76 other provinces. (FYI, in 2007 when the first Car Free Day was observed in Thailand only 31 provinces took part.)

As many as 6,398 participants had pre-registered online but I'm sure the actual number of cyclists who showed up was more than that.
