A little less scripted conversation

When it comes to the everyday use of language, a world exists outside of what is taught in textbooks, and rote recitation is unlikely to get you past hello

It's back to school this week for many Bangkok kids following an extended October term break owing to the floods. And when it comes to English class, across the country as each teacher walks into his or her classroom, students stand to attention and the following conversation takes place:

Students (slowly, and in unison): "Good morning, teacher."

Teacher: "Good morning. How are you?"

    The topic of this subject, although quite true, is a dinosaur subject. Everybody has known this for eons and eons. And, nothing has changed for eons and eons. Alot of print space for old news.
