Gardening in Thailand: We'd love to do it by the book
There is currently no work in English offering information specific to the conditions of this country and publishing one would be costly, but that's not enough to stop dreams of publishing such a tome taking root
Jan Steuten from Chiang Mai writes that he has been living in Thailand for 21 years, but "I never found a manageable and handy book on the subject of how to take care of indoor plants and garden plants. The few times I've seen books on the subject, they cost 1,000 or more baht. I would like to ask you where I can find such a book, in English, at a reasonable price of say 500 baht or less."
GAP IN THE MARKET: Books, books and more books, but there’s not one in English about plants and gardening in Thailand.
I understand Mr Steuten's frustration. Thai bookshops are not lacking in gardening books. However, those written in English are most certainly imported and rarely cost less than 1,000 baht, but what's probably more important is that they are of little use here because many of the plants and flowers discussed are not found in Thailand. All we can do is try to apply the knowledge they impart to growing the tropical plants we have in our gardens.
