Pretty plumeria the plant to pick

Year-round they're decked out with flowers which come in a big variety of colours, so long as you don't go overboard with fertilisers or water

If you like flowers and have the space, plant plumeria. At Chatuchak about three metres away from Gate 3, there are many cultivars to choose from every Wednesday and Thursday during the midweek plant market. Gone are my childhood days when plumeria flowers were only white with yellow centre; these days they come in all shades of red, pink, yellow and orange, as well as pinkish salmon, pinkish chocolate, pinkish blue and other colour combinations.

IN BLOOM: Whatever the colour, plumeria make an attractive addition to any garden.

"There must be around 200 colours in various shades, some only slightly different from the others," said Tiew Makrut-in, whose nursery on Rama V Road specialises in plumeria. She sells them cheaply, 100 to 300 baht each depending on size, all already flowering. Apart from potted plants she also sells cuttings by the bundle and seeds. Plumeria cuttings can survive for weeks and some foreign buyers prefer them because they take less space during transport than plants that already have roots.
