What seemed like an evening of harmless fun hinted at the lax security which led to a tragedy

Two years ago I caught a train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. 

The train pulled out of Hua Lamphong station around 7pm in what was an otherwise pleasant evening, with the exception of one curious incident.

Prior to boarding the train I had no idea of the liquor laws on board Thai trains. Fearing those rules to be in line with the oft-hysterical ones we are forced to comply with on land, I took the liberty of filling a plastic Singha water bottle with Absolut. Be prepared, as the scouts say.
