Bringing a garden back from the dead

Even time-poor amateurs can transform an ailing backyard by paying close attention to soil mixture and water

Out of the blue I received a message on Facebook from a former colleague whom I had not seen for more than 20 years. “I need some advice on rehabilitating my garden. I would be most obliged if you could take the time to come by and take a look,” he wrote.

I am not a landscape designer and I don’t make house calls, except when I do a feature on someone’s garden, which I very seldom do. But curiosity got the better of me, so I decided to take my friend up on his invitation. And I am glad I did, for the visit was like a trip to an era that is now long gone.
