Black and white aside, red is the colour that yields the largest number of symbolic interpretations, stereotypes and discussions, regardless of cultures. It intrigues researchers of psychology, sociology and even politics, and in fashion, it's the one colour that becomes synonymous with a brand (Valentino red) and heated law suit (between Christian Louboutin and Yves Saint Laurent over the patented lacquered red sole). This season, red becomes the colour of choice for designers to make a runway statement.

Although different shades of red appear on the autumn/winter 2011 runway shows, it's bright red that heralds the fashion domination of the colour. One reason is probably the fact that many designers look back at the heritage motif especially the Royal Stewart tartan _ for which bright red is the base colour.
