Jurors for the New Currents award at South Korea’s Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) described firsttime Thai director Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit’s 36 as ‘‘breathtaking’’ while praising the ‘‘extraordinary sympathy’’ co-winner director Maryam Najafi drew from her audience throughout her entry Kayan.

Challenge a Thai about Thai culture and more often than not, they'll turn into an enraged jingoistic nazi. Yet, Thais routinely eschew the cultural achievements of truly talented Thais for sub-standard drivel from both Thailand and other countries; Korea being the current flavour of the month.

Another example of this is the film Fah Talai Jone, which died at the local cinemas after 1 week, but went onto to win a major award at the Cannes Film Festival under the title, Tears of the Black Tiger.

'"never included an unnecessary word," they said in a statement.' How did they know that unless they speak Thai?

Fail to see the irony, movies that tend to get the accolades at film festivals are very rarely popular movies and they only cater to a very limited audience that appreciate special qualities....exactly as with book prices, the decorated books are very rarely best sellers either.
