McQuarrie, who earned an Oscar for The Usual Suspects in the late 1990s, had helped finetune the plot for Ghost Protocol, the fourth movie of the Mission: Impossible saga. He would succeed Brad Bird as director for the upcoming chapter in the franchise, which is loosely based on the popular TV series from the 1960s.
