The director of Drive is said to be currently in talks with Sony Pictures to direct Denzel Washington in The Equalizer next spring. Nicolas Winding Refn would work from a draft by Richard Wenk (16 Blocks) revolving around a retired intelligence officer who works pro bono for the poor.

In the works since 2005, the project had stalled since summer 2010. At the time, Russell Crowe's name was thrown around for the role of the hero Robert McCall, with a plot by Paul Haggis (Collision).

In December 2011, Sony Pictures decided to relaunch the project, this time with Denzel Washington and Richard Wenk, who was already tied to the sequel to The Expendables.

Robert McCall's original adventures were broadcast between 1985 and 1989 on CBS.
