Argo distortions upset former envoy

TORONTO — The Canadian former ambassador to Iran who protected Americans at great personal risk during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis says it will reflect poorly on director Ben Affleck if he doesn't say a few words about Canada's role if Argo wins the Oscar for best picture Sunday.

But Ken Taylor — who said he feels slighted by the movie because it makes Canada look like a meek observer to CIA heroics in the rescue of six US citizens caught in the crisis — is not expecting it.

"I would hope he would. If he doesn't than it's a further reflection," Taylor said. "But given the events of the last while, I'm not necessarily anticipating anything."

    Pt. 2

The country has moved so far to the right that to make a movie with an unvarnished look at America's role in toppling regimes in the Middle East would be to invite hisses, catcalls and protests against its "anti-American" stance. If you want a good look at American history of the period, check out
Oliver Stone's recent series on Showtime, "The Untold History Of The United States."

I'm surprised a politically liberal guy like Affleck bowed to the usual pressure to
make a film "that would play in Peoria." I was disappointed in the film's casual
glancing over the 1953 CIA coup that installed the Shah in the first place. That was the
whole reason for the 1979 revolution and it is barely mentioned. If you want a hit movie
in the States, you can't make America look bad-truth be damned. We've got to be the heroes
and everybody else is just swimming in our wake. See Pt.2
