In the past, the Northeast was unjustly looked down upon as a poor relation, but an honest look at the environment, the people and the distinctive if simple cuisine quickly reveals that this was never really the case
Half a century ago, Thais in other regions of the country often heard the government describe the conditions of Isan in dire terms. It was dry and arid, impoverished and without water. You could not farm there, so the people who lived in Isan were poorer than those in other regions. As a result of this attitude there was a government policy to transfer civil servants to posts in Isan as punishment if they misbehaved or were unproductive.

Besides the slighting words and policies from the government, people were familiar with the Thung Kula Rong Hai (''Fields of the Weeping Kula People''), an area stretching over several Isan provinces named for a tribe from Myanmar who entered Thailand and were unable to find a place to settle in this inhospitable landscape, which also gave the impression of Isan as a parched and hopeless place.
