Austria is famous for its food-friendly whites, with the flagship varietal being Gruner Veltliner, offering subtle fruit, mineral and pepper flavours in a range of styles. Equally known are Austrian dry-style Rieslings which are also great with food as they exhibit crisp, balanced acidity with a nice purity of peach and citrus fruits. The country also produces powerful wines from exotic red grapes including the Zweigelt, Blaufrankisch, Blauer Portugieser, Blauburger and Blauer Zweigelt.
