In 15 years, Thais have taken the plunge and evolved into sophisticated and caffeinated consumers, but has our coffee cup runneth over?

Until 1998, the majority of coffee drinkers in Thailand paid less than 15 baht a cup. Indulging in a beverage prepared with instant coffee powder, they seemed comfortable with the only three brews available: hot, cold and black. The chilled variety was a plastic bag of ice with the hot mixture poured on top, which could conveniently swing from your finger.

Today Thais have improved our caffeine preferences and taken them to a worldly level. Complying with global coffee-drinking trends, not only are we prepared to spend six times the amount we used to for coffee, or even more, we are also ordering it unhesitatingly with Italian characterisations, whether it be cappuccino, espresso, macchiato or Americano.
