The Mid-Autumn Festival, or the Mooncake Festival, is interesting in many ways, from the diverse versions of how it came about to the evolution of the mooncakes over the centuries.
It is believed that mooncakes were designed as an offering to the Moon God, as this month _ the eighth lunar month _ is when the moon is supposedly at its biggest and brightest. Another story said that in the 14th century, a Chinese rebel distributed mooncakes to the people, and hidden inside the cakes were a note instructing them to rise up against the Mongolian rule.
Today, the Mooncake Festival is when hotels, bakeries and even some seemingly irrelevant businesses let their creative juices flow and come up with new recipes, packages and gimmicks to both celebrate this cultural event and to promote their brands. A decade ago, the fillings of mooncakes were limited to the usual durian and egg, mixed nuts and lotus seed, presented in red or gold tin boxes.
