ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

Welcome to Guru 's Gate Crasher, your ultimate guide to finding something fresh to do in this big city.

DJ SET

Continuing their current hosting form is Retox Sessions, who have had a string of big name DJs come through the city this year. This time round it's David Guetta, who will be in control of the wheels of steel at Bitec (88 Bang Na-Trat Road Km 1, 02-749-3939, www.bitec.co.th) on Thu (May 9). He'd be much more interesting to see at a smaller venue, but that's the way it goes. Tickets are B1,600, or B2,200 for VIP, which might deter some. It's a fair amount of money to go see one guy, but he's one of the biggest names around at the moment so let's see if Bangkok can receive him as well as any other world capital would.

DJ SET

After the big bassy success of Andy C earlier in the week, Snareophobe from the UK will play on Sat (May 4) at Grease (2/F, Club LSD, Sukhumvit Soi 49). They are known for their diverse sounds, bringing everything from drum 'n' bass to dubstep to breakbeat, which should sound great on the thumping PA of the venue. For an audio sample, visit soundcloud.com/snareophobe. Support will come from Dubway regulars Dragon and Orawan. Doors will open around 10pm but he should be on around midnight. Entry is a reasonable B300 with a drink.

PARTY

Ari is no secret any more, judging by the amount of new cafes and bars in the area. Gone are the days when Pla Dib was the cultural outlier of the city's north. But that doesn't mean it ain't fun still. Quite the opposite, in fact. Chiming into the coolness is Sunday Ride (May 5), an afternoon of "music, fashion, fun and food". It's presented by Uuba and Vacancy, who will provide the music. Venue is Ari Bar (Ari Soi 4, 087-511-4466), the place just across the road from Salt. Entry is free too. Get on your bikes and ride! Combine it with a trip to newcomer Fatbird just down the road for a killer Sunday programme. More daytime events please, we say.

PARTY

To keep the long weekend going, UB Radio will host their fifth anniversary celebration on Sun (May 5). They do a lot for the local music scene, so there's plenty of support on hand to make the party right, including a bunch of willing local DJs. Venue for the party is Bash Bangkok (37 Sukhumvit Soi 11, www.bashbangkok.com). Entry is B400 with a drink, along with free vodka from 11pm for an hour. Looks like it could go late.
