On their fifth album, France's greatest synth-pop export downplay their knack for contagious pop and aim for something else entirely
Ask any indie music fan who their favourite bands are, and Phoenix will almost definitely make the cut. Formed in 1995, the band, then called Darlin', started off with guitarist Laurent Brancowitz along with Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (these two later went on to give the world an electronic music project under the name of Daft Punk). It wasn't until 1999 when Phoenix finally came into their own with a lineup that includes vocalist Thomas Mars, bassist Deck d'Arcy and guitarist Christian Mazzalai.
