Charismatic Italian-American pianist prepares for Thai debut

Italian-American classical pianist Julian Gargiulo, who renders the compositions of masters with passion and precision, makes his Bangkok debut on Sunday.

He will perform at 7.30pm as part of the International Piano Festival 2013 at Siam Ratchada Music School.

The evening programme will feature the music of Beethoven, Chopin, Scarlatti, Rachmaninoff and his own compositions.

Recognised for his personal brand of charm, humour and charisma, which has filled concert halls, the dynamic pianist has performed in the US, Canada, England, Italy, France, Germany, Russia, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, China and Australia.

His performances have been met with public and critical acclaim.

Born and educated in Italy, Gargiulo studied at the Verona State Conservatory, the Mugi Academy in Rome and the Moscow State Conservatory.

In the US he received his bachelor's degree at Rowan University, a master's degree at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University and his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Maryland.

In 2008, he founded the non-profit organisation 16000children.org, which brings together musicians, visual artists and filmmakers in events to raise awareness of the 16,000 children who die of hunger in the world every day.

The organisation's performances began in March 2010.

In 2011, he released his seventh CD, No Smoking, which features original compositions along with works by Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Piazzolla and more.

The 40-year-old artist has been currently on tours in Italy, Asia, Australia and the US for the 2013-14 season, which started off with a performance at New York's Carnegie Recital Hall early this year.
