What do Johann Sebastian Bach, Robert Schumann and Edvard Grieg have in common? Well, apart from the obvious, the classical composers all have links with the German city Leipzig.
The ‘@Leipzig’ concert will be performed by three classical musicians from Silpakorn University at Siam Society on July 17 at 7pm.
Bach spent the last 27 years of his life working there, dying in 1850. Schumann, together with Felix Mendelssohn, founded Germany's first conservatory of music in the city, and that was where the Norwegian Grieg was trained.
To celebrate these connections, three prominent musicians and Silpakorn University faculty members will perform a recital called "@Leipzig".
Held in collaboration with Silpakorn University's Faculty of Music and the Fund for Classical Music Promotion, the concert will take place at Siam Society on Asok Road on July 17 at 7pm.
Before that, at 6pm, musicologist Jean-Pierre Kirkland will hold a talk entitled "The Leipzig Music Scene _ Composers and Works" in English.
Violinist Tasana Nagavajara, deputy dean and director of SU's Summer Music School, and distinguished pianist and pedagogue Dr Pornphan Banternghansa will perform Bach's Sonata in E Major for Violin and Piano, BWV 1016, plus Schumann's Intermezzo for Violin and Piano from his posthumously published Sonata F-A-E, (WoO22) and Edvard Grieg's Sonata for Violin and Piano Opus 13 in G Major. They will be joined by Damrih Banawitayakit, dean of music, on oboe for Bach's Sonata in G Minor for Oboe and Piano, BWV 1020, and Schumann's Three Romances for Oboe and Piano, Opus 94.
