The crowd said it best when they said nothing at all. When polite applause quickly gave way to silence about a dozen songs into Ronan Keating's ballad-laden set at Impact Arena on Wednesday night, clearly he was testing our patience.
The night was rescued by an uptempo finish that at least had us on our feet, if not exactly grooving, and a high-energy performance from warm-up act Two-Popetorn. There were big cheers too for any mention of Boyzone and getting the band back together. Keating saying khob khun krub got a bigger reaction than a few of the songs.
But the worst moment came during Scars, a reflective and quietly beautiful number in its own way despite coming from a Christmas album. The song went from slow to a dramatic full stop, during which everyone could listen in to the loud conversation of one group up the back. Keating kept his cool, but as soon as the song was over ripped his jacket off to show his tattoos and injected a bit more energy into his performance.
