International jazz to fill island air

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

Latin and jazz music will fill the air of Koh Samui as 40 international and local artists perform during "Samui Latin and Jazz Week".

The music festival will feature a broad variety of artists from the Latin and jazz scenes at seven venues around the island every evening from 8pm in the week from Sept 29 to Oct 6. There will be two days of "Main Stage" activity on Oct 4-5, which is the highlight of the week _ this will start at 6.30pm at Chaweng Beach, outside Amari Palm Reef.

Guests can expect Latin American rhythms with electrifying percussion that will make them dance. Renowned artists Dina Medina from Cape Verde, Nando Vanin from Colombia, Amik Guerra from Cuba and Nils Fischer with Cabo Cuba Jazz are just a few of the names who will bring Latin fever to the island.

Taking the stage from the US is Deborah Brown, one of the finest jazz vocalists on the scene, who will enchant the audience as she sings from the American Songbook with classics from Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and more.

For pure virtuosity, Saskia Laroo, a Dutch musician who has long been dubbed "the lady Miles Davis", will perform with her quartet Jazzkia, a fusion of jazz, funk and dance.

Added to the line-up is the world-class act Peter Beets who will present music from his new album Portrait Of Peterson.

Also coming will be Nadia Basurto and Miquel Rodriquez from Spain, Dutch singer Judith Nijland, Rolf Delfos from the Netherlands, French pianist and singer Fabio Deldongo, and Thailand's Koh Mr Saxman, jazz guitarist Changton Kunchorn Na Ayudhya, and singer Buntita Prachamorn.

Tickets cost 500 baht for the evening of Sept 29-Oct 3 and admission is free for the nights of Oct 4-6.
